Introductory sessions & register

In the Netherlands, children begin school at the age of four. You can register your child for primary school when they turn three. To ensure every child has equal opportunities, the registration process is centrally organized in the Utrecht region. Visit the website naardebasisschool.nl to learn about the five steps required to secure a spot for your child at a primary school. While we’ve outlined the steps briefly here, we recommend reading the website carefully for more detailed information.

Step 1

Choose a School. On the Municipality of Utrecht’s website, you’ll find a list of schools in your area. We encourage you to attend introductoray sessions to help you make an informed decision. The Willibrordschool also offers such sessions. You can register for one of the following times. Afterward, you are welcome to join one of our teachers for a visit to our other location, the Sint Bonifatiusschool in Haarzuilens. Experience the same high-quality education with a focus on nature and the beautiful surroundings. We would love for you to visit Haarzuilens with us. To attend an information session, please email us at info.willibrord@wijs-utrecht.nl.

Was your child born before October 1, 2018? If you wish to register your child at our school, we kindly ask that you first attend an introductory session. During this session, we will share our educational vision and explain how we organize learning at Willibrordschool.

Once you’ve registered for the session, you will receive a confirmation of your registration. If you feel enthusiastic about the Willibrordschool after the meeting, you can subscribe to our information letter, which is published twice a year. As part of the municipality’s central registration procedure naardebasisschool.nl, you can select Willibrordschool as your preferred choice for your child.

Two to three months before your child's birthday, you will be invited for an intake interview. During this interview, we’ll discuss your child’s development, as the insights from parents help us make an informed decision about placement in a nursery group. It’s also an excellent opportunity for parents to ask any questions. Following this interview, we will decide on your child's final registration.

Step 2

Register your child at the school of your choice during the quarter in which your child turns three, and feel free to include other schools you are interested in. This approach increases your chances of securing a spot at a school that meets your preferences. We also recommend registering your child at our other location, the Sint Bonifatiusschool in Haarzuilens. At this location, we follow the same educational approach, mission, vision, and aim to create a consistent pedagogical environment.

Step 3

The Municipality of Utrecht collects all registrations within a given quarter in a central system. After the final day of the quarter, registrations are allocated fairly based on the available spaces at each school. However, there are certain priority rules, such as those for siblings attending the same school. You can find more information about these rules on naardebasisschool.nl/.

Step 4

You will receive a message from the Municipality of Utrecht informing you of the school where your child has been placed. At that point, you can proceed with registering your child at the school.

Step 5

It's time for school! And in our case, we're excited to welcome you to the Willibrordschool!

Getting settled in

Children are welcome to visit Willibrordschool for up to three half-days starting from the age of three years and ten months to help them adjust. About a month before your child turns four, they will receive a card from the teacher with details about the three introductory mornings, which the teacher will have contacted you about. Please note that new students cannot start full-time immediately – we begin with morning sessions and gradually extend the school hours. We also recommend arranging between-school and after-school care as needed. If the groups exceed 30 children by the end of the school year, we advise parents to have their child start after the summer holidays.
